"Where is Knowledge held"

Where is Knowledge held?

During Sundays group session “where is knowledge held” was brought up in discussion.

It really got me reflecting on my practice and where knowledge is held in a studio environment . My mind then went down a big rabbit hole and I found myself relating knowledge to respect and studio etiquette.

Currently I am performing my practice in a classical ballet company in Eastern Europe. Knowledge here is not so easily passed on because of the obvious language barrier!

We have Artists here who have been working as professionals for over 20 years.

To me these artists hold so much knowledge and there is an unspoken rule of respect.

Recently the balance was thrown out because we had a young emerging choreographer working with us.

So during this rehearsal I started to really observe “where is the Knowledge held”. With the experienced artist or the choreographer?

Yes the choreographer has the ideas and knows exactly what he wants but I put the question to you “where is the knowledge held”?

As a young Artist and through many years of working in the studio I always believed the knowledge was held at the front of the room.

Now after the group session on Sunday I am starting to question where is knowledge held.

It would be really interesting to hear some ideas around knowledge in a studio environment with experienced professionals.

  1. You have brought up an interesting thought. Where is knowledge held in the classroom. Do you believe we all come with knowledge to the studio? I think in a collaborative process the knowledge is held within the collective group. Often in the dance world , and particularly ballet, there are traditional hierarchies where the person in the front of the room is granted the position of authority and seen as the most knowledgable. They may in fact be the most knowledgable about their speciality but that does not diminish the accumulated knowledge within you or the group. Do you think age plays directly into knowledge? It is challenging for me for I see so many different forms of knowledge in play. Very interesting question Christina.
